Postgraduate students and research scholars of Manipur University (MU) and Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) today staged a peaceful protest in front of the Directorate of University and Higher Education, Imphal, demanding rectification of the Manipur Public Service Commission notification for Assistant Professor recruitment.
Addressing the media, Y David, a research scholar from the Department of Education, Manipur University, said postgraduate students and research scholars participated peacefully in the protest. He stated that the issue arose from the MPSC notification issued under the 4119 package, in which the Education subject was included initially but later removed and replaced with allied subjects.
David pointed out that Manipur University allows allied subjects only in the Physical Education programme during admissions and that allied subjects have already been removed from other academic programmes. He termed the inclusion of allied subjects in Assistant Professor recruitment as unjustified, as it excludes candidates from the core Education discipline while allowing applicants from other subjects.
It may be mentioned that allied subjects are meant only for interdisciplinary learning support and cannot be treated as equivalent to core subjects for faculty recruitment. Expert maintained that recruitment based on allied subjects violates university academic norms and undermines the principle of subject specialisation.
The protesting students demanded immediate corrective action from the Directorate. Placards reading “No Allied Entry – Respect MU Order” and “Justice for Pure Education” were displayed during the demonstration.
