Imphal, April 27:
Meitei Resurgence Forum (MReF) is advocating for the commemoration of the anniversary of the violence that began on May 3 last year as the “Rising Day of Indigenous People.” Takhellambam Ramananda, the spokesperson of MReF, outlined the historical context, highlighting the influx of Kuki refugees from Burma into Manipur since 1967. He noted that the number of refugees granted citizenship steadily increased over the years, with a significant rise observed after the Suspension of Operations began in 2005. However, it was only in 2023 that violence erupted with the alleged invasion of Kuki Narco terrorists into Manipur.
In light of these developments, MReF is calling for the recognition and celebration of the indigenous peoples’ resilience and struggle. By designating May 3 as the Rising Day of Indigenous People, MReF aims to honor the heritage and contributions of the indigenous communities while also raising awareness about the challenges they face, particularly in the context of recent violence and displacement.
