The Manipur People’s Party (MPP) has strongly condemned the killing of Nehkam Jomhao, 59, Chairman of the Thadou Literature Society, who was abducted from his home in Karbi Anglong, Assam, and later murdered.
In a press statement, MPP described the incident as a serious assault on indigenous communities and held armed groups responsible for the crime. The party reiterated its demand for abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, claiming it provides shelter to such groups.
MPP questioned whether the BJP-led government at the Centre had entered into the SoO arrangement only to embolden militant groups, pointing out that repeated attacks on civilians, including women and children, had raised concerns about security and governance.
The party also highlighted that threats were recently issued to Thadou Inpi Manipur for condemning violence against Meiteis. It warned that if the central and state governments continue to remain silent, further ethnic clashes between indigenous communities and armed groups could escalate.
The MPP paid tribute to Jomhao’s contribution to the preservation of Thadou literature and culture, describing his death as a great loss to the community.
