Imphal, March 22:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Keisham Meghachandra Singh has condemned the brutal rape and murder of a 9-year-old internally displaced girl in a relief camp in Churachandpur district. The young victim, a Class II student, had been living in the camp after being forced to flee her home due to the ongoing violence in Manipur.
Expressing deep sorrow over the horrific incident, Meghachandra Singh took to social media platform X, stating that he shares the pain and suffering of the bereaved family and will extend every possible help to ensure justice for the child.
His statement comes as Supreme Court and High Court judges, along with state judicial officers, visited and inspected a relief camp in Churachandpur. Singh urged the judiciary to take note of the crime and ensure swift justice for the young victim.
He also made a strong appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and personally meet the children, women, and elderly people who have been living in relief camps for nearly two years. Singh expressed disappointment over the lack of response from constitutional authorities, stating, “Under the President’s Rule in Manipur, there has been no word of concern from either the President of India or the Governor of Manipur on the rape and murder of our young tribal daughter in the relief camp. The Union Home Minister, too, remains silent on it.”
The MPCC President further urged the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights to intervene and ensure justice for the victim.
Raising pressing questions about the future of the displaced people, Singh asked the Prime Minister:
1. How long will internally displaced persons in Manipur be forced to stay in relief camps?
2. When will they be able to return to their original homes?
3. How many more children in the relief camps will remain unprotected from such heinous crimes?
4. Is the government waiting for the Prime Minister’s visit instead of facilitating the return of displaced persons to their homes?
5. When will the Prime Minister visit Manipur to address the humanitarian crisis?
With growing public outrage over the incident, Singh’s statement has intensified calls for accountability and justice.
