MPCC President criticizes PM Modi’s “Manipur Intervention”; blames BJP for crisis handling

Imphal, April 10:

President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), K. Meghachandra, lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks regarding the “timely intervention on the Manipur crisis by the center,” questioning whether the present state of Manipur is a result of said intervention. Speaking during a facilitation program for the merger of Janata Dal (United) Tamenglong district into the Indian National Congress at Congress Bhavan on BT Road on Tuesday, Meghachandra pointed out that the people of the state are divided and unable to move freely to Kangpokpi, Moreh, Churachandpur, and valley areas due to communal tensions. “How could this be called restoration of peace?” the MPCC President questioned. In an exclusive interview with the Assam Tribune, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had stated, “Timely intervention by the central government saved Manipur.” Responding to this statement, Meghachandra criticized Prime Minister Modi’s timing, labeling his remarks to a newspaper, particularly with elections approaching, as unfortunate. He further challenged Prime Minister Modi to demonstrate his love for Manipur by coming to the state and campaigning for the election, assuring that no obstacles would be placed in his way.
“If he (PM) really loves Manipur, come to Manipur and campaign for the election,” Meghchandra said, and assured that no one will stop him from campaigning in the state.
The Congress leader further stated that the BJP government had not implemented any stringent measures to address the crisis that began on May 3, 2023. He emphasized that claiming restoration of peace through timely intervention, they should feel ashamed. On the other hand, the Congress leader expressed surprise at the blame placed on the Congress party regarding the viral video of two women by the BJP. Meghachandra stated that the detailed report of the incident should be made public by the government. Instead of making false claims, the government should disclose the detailed report of the incident to the public; otherwise, the false propaganda will serve no purpose. He further stated that Chief Minister N. Biren Singh should be held responsible for what is happening in the state. He added that in connection with the viral video of two women being paraded naked, there are reports of high-profile BJP man being responsible. The BJP should cease blaming Congress for political gains in the election, he said.
The MPCC president lauded the members of the Yuva Morcha, Mandal, IT cell, etc., of the Janata Dal (United) which have merged with the Congress Party. “With the merger of the large number of members of the JD (U) to the Congress, it is now confident that the Congress will win in both the Outer and the Inner seat in the upcoming election,” Meghachandra said.
The facilitation program was also attended by CLP leader Okram Ibobi, CWC member Gaikhangam, and other members of the I.N.D.I. Alliance.
