Imphal, Aug 22:
The Manipur State Congress Committee (MPCC) today participated in a nationwide protest demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into the so-called “Modi-Adani Mega Scam.”
The rally was held in front of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office at Sangakpham, Imphal. It was led by prominent Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, MPCC President Keisham Meghachandra, Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Gaikhangam, and several former ministers and MLAs. A significant number of party supporters attended the rally, voicing their strong disapproval of the alleged scam and calling for an immediate and thorough investigation.
The call for a JPC was called by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who asserted that a committee would be established within a month to probe the “Modi-Adani Mega Scam.” Ramesh accused the government of illegal over-invoicing of coal and power equipment, laundering Rs 20,000 crore back into Adani companies, and pressuring Indian businesses to divest assets under the Modi administration. He also alleged that the government was benefiting the Prime Minister’s close associates at the expense of Indian consumers, who have faced rising electricity prices and airport fees.
The Sangakpham rally is part of a broader nationwide campaign by the Congress party aimed at holding the Modi government accountable for its alleged role in the scam and ensuring a transparent investigation. The Congress has intensified its critique of the Narendra Modi government following a recent Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) investigation, which introduced new allegations against the Adani Group. The Congress party has labeled the issue as the “biggest scam in independent India” and has questioned the credibility of the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (SEBI) investigation that cleared the Adani Group of any wrongdoing.
