Imphal, Sept 25:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has lodged a formal complaint with the Officer-in-Charge of City Police Station, Imphal West District, regarding alleged open threats made by leaders of the BJP and its alliance partners against the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. The complaint cited multiple incidents where prominent BJP leaders and their allies publicly issued threats of bodily harm and assassination against Gandhi, causing concern over his safety and public peace.
The MPCC referred to an incident on September 11, 2024, where BJP leader Tarvinder Singh Marwah, during a party event, allegedly made an assassination threat. He reportedly warned Gandhi, stating, “Rahul Gandhi, you better behave, or you will meet the same fate as your grandmother,” a reference to the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Another incident cited in the complaint involved Sanjay Gaikwad, an MLA from the Shinde Sena (an alliance partner of the BJP in Maharashtra), who on September 16, 2024, allegedly announced a bounty of ¹ 11 lakhs for anyone who would cut off Gandhi’s tongue. Additionally, the complaint included remarks made by Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Bittu, on September 15, 2024, where he referred to Gandhi as the “number one terrorist of the country,” which was widely circulated on social media and television channels.
The MPCC also highlighted a statement by BJP leader and Uttar Pradesh minister, Raghuraj Singh, who similarly labeled Rahul Gandhi as “India’s number one terrorist” on September 16, 2024.
According to the MPCC, these statements were part of a larger conspiracy aimed at provoking public unrest, inciting violence, and creating enmity against Rahul Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. The party believes that these hate-filled comments were designed to obstruct Gandhi from performing his public duties as Leader of the Opposition, particularly his advocacy for marginalized sections of society, including women, youth, and Dalits.
The MPCC further alleged that the repeated threats and derogatory statements were attempts to jeopardize Gandhi’s safety and disturb public peace, especially during the ongoing elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana. They requested that the police register an FIR under relevant sections of the BNS, 2023, against Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Sanjay Gaikwad, Ravneet Bittu, Raghuraj Singh, and their associates for criminal intimidation, conspiracy, and inciting public hatred.
The Congress committee urged law enforcement to take swift action, fearing that these threats could lead to violence and unrest among the general public.
