Imphal, Aug 8:
Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba has called for the designation of Khwairamband Ema Keithel as a living cultural heritage site during the ongoing Parliament session. Highlighting its significance during zero hour, MP Sanajaoba emphasized that Khwairamband Ema Keithel, situated in the heart of Imphal city, is an economic hub exclusively run by women and has long been the backbone of Manipur’s economy.
The MP underscored the market’s pivotal role not just as a commercial center but also as a crucial socio-economic landmark in Manipur’s history. He noted that the women of Manipur have historically played significant roles, such as leading the Nupi Lal (women’s wars) against British colonial rule in 1904 and 1939, with many of these courageous women being vendors at this very market.
Describing Khwairamband Ema Keithel as a stellar example of women’s economic empowerment and a testament to Nari Shakti (women power), MP Sanajaoba called for its recognition under Article 51A of the Indian Constitution, which promotes the preservation of the nation’s rich cultural heritage. Additionally, he appealed to the Union government to safeguard and preserve this market as an essential socio-economic landmark under Article 49, emphasizing the protection of historical and cultural monuments.
