Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has raised serious concern in Parliament over the rapid decline in the population of the Manipuri Pony, urging immediate intervention for its protection and conservation.
Raising the issue through a special mention, Sanajaoba stated that the Manipuri Pony, a rare indigenous breed of Equus caballus, is an integral part of Manipur’s cultural and historical identity. He noted that the pony is closely associated with the origin of polo and symbolises the state’s heritage, strength and traditional way of life.
He informed the House that despite the existence of the Manipuri Pony Conservation and Development Policy, 2016, ineffective implementation and various other factors have led to a sharp decline in the pony population, which has now fallen below 1,000.
The MP also drew attention to recent reports of ponies being slaughtered and sold for meat, stating that such incidents have caused widespread public concern and distress in the state. He termed such acts unacceptable and called for strict action.
Recalling his earlier efforts, Sanajaoba said he had raised the issue in Parliament on July 22, 2022, seeking central assistance for conservation projects. He also submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur on January 27 this year, urging protection of the endangered breed.
Stressing that the Manipuri Pony has been associated with the civilisation of Manipur for over 5,000 years, he said any act of hunting, killing or selling the animal for meat is a matter of grave concern.
He further pointed out that such acts are in violation of provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Sanajaoba urged the Union Government to issue necessary directions to the State Government to ensure strict implementation of the conservation policy and to take urgent measures to safeguard the Manipuri Pony from extinction.
