Imphal, Dec 12:
Congress MP Bimol Akoijam has urged the nation to view the ongoing crisis in Manipur as a “national issue” rather than a “local” concern, calling for greater attention from the central government.
In a tweet today, Bimol Akoijam commended Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, for raising the issue during Zero Hour on December 11. “Glad to hear such voices to make the deaf Government of India hear the plight of the people of Manipur!” Bimol Akoijam wrote.
Speaking in Parliament, Gaurav Gogoi described the situation in Manipur as a “grave humanitarian crisis” and criticized the government for its misplaced priorities. “This government, in order to hide its failure in Manipur, is using George Soros as a shield,” he said, drawing attention to the lack of focus on the violence and instability in the state.
Gaurav Gogoi painted a bleak picture of Manipur’s current state, highlighting the rampant extortion, economic collapse, and the rise in illegal trade of arms, drugs, and timber. He also expressed grave concern over the deteriorating public services, including education and healthcare.
“Schools and colleges remain shut, leaving thousands of students at risk of losing their academic year. Healthcare facilities have been damaged or destroyed. Fear and uncertainty have gripped the population,” Gaurav Gogoi stated, urging immediate government intervention.
In a direct appeal, Gaurav Gogoi questioned the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in addressing the crisis. “The people of Manipur want to know when the Prime Minister will visit the state and when the Home Minister will outline concrete steps to resolve the situation,” he said.
