Imphal, June 15:
Meetei/Meitei Tribe Union (MMTU) has organized a discussion program to address the land ownership issues among the indigenous people today. Haobijam Surjit, Convenor of the Youth Wing of the Meetei/Meitei Tribe Union (MMTU), has emphasized the urgent need for economic development in the lower lands of Manipur to prevent hardships for the Meetei/Meitei community. Speaking at a program organized under the theme “My Homestead, My Right” at the JNIMS Lecture Hall in Prompat, Imphal East, Surjit highlighted critical concerns regarding land issues in the state.
The discussion program, focusing on “Land Issue in Manipur,” revealed alarming findings from an MMTU survey indicating that a vast number of people in the five valley districts lack land ownership documents (patta). Additionally, Surjit pointed out the exorbitant fees imposed during land distribution among coparceners, which further exacerbate the challenges faced by the community.
Mutum Churamani, Administration Secretary of MMTU, stressed the necessity for the Revenue Department to conduct comprehensive surveys and data collection to accurately assess the situation. He underscored that after seven decades of democratic participation, the Meetei/Meitei people cannot continue living without proper land rights, likening their plight to that of refugees.
The event served as a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies to address these pressing issues, advocating for equitable land distribution and economic empowerment for sustainable development in Manipur.
