Imphal, Sept 11:
The Manipuri Meitei Association, Bengaluru (MMAB), has addressed a letter dated September 10, 2024, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for immediate and decisive action against the rising aggression of Kuki militants in Manipur. The letter outlines concerns about the violence that began on May 3, 2023, and emphasizes that the conflict is not about the Meitei people’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status but rather a premeditated effort by Kuki militants to establish an independent nation, “Zelangam.”
MMAB stresses that Kuki militants are backed by external forces with a broader goal of carving out a Christian nation across parts of Northeast India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. The association points to the involvement of foreign technologies, including military-grade drones and missiles, that have been used in attacks on civilians and important sites, like the home of former Chief Minister M. Koireng.
The association also highlights blockades of national highways, including National Highway-37, and water contamination affecting civilians, among other tactics employed by the militants. In their appeal, MMAB has called for the abrogation of the Suspension of Operation Agreement with Kuki militants and has urged the government to take strong measures to protect Manipur’s territorial integrity and national security.
Additionally, MMAB is pushing for an independent judicial inquiry into militant activities, the protection of Meitei culture, and the implementation of a National Register of Citizens (NRC) to tackle illegal immigration in the region.
