Miyamgi Fingang Lanmi (MFL) – the army wing of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) is celebrating its 18th Raising Day on August 13, along with the Patriots day observance.
A statement by the Military Affairs Committee of the proscribed group said that the MFL was established on the day that our martyred forefathers who had fought the British force for the freedom of the nation in 1891 Anglo Manipur War. Since the last many years the KCP have been observing the Patriots Day along with the Raising day of the MFL, the statement said.
The statement further said that August 13 of 1891 – the day Yuvaraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General were hung to death was the darkest part in the history of Manipur. The newly budded civilization after 7 years devastation (1819 – 1826) was throttled by the British. The day has been observing as patriots’ day by the people by paying floral tributes to the martyrs of the Anglo Manipur War. The significance of observing the Patriots’ Day should be well understand by the people too it added.
The statement also elaborated in details about the 7 years devastation. It explain how it happened and how the Manipur came in contact with the British. Later, the origin of Anglo Manipur War was also well explained.
It elaborated on how Tikendrajit, Angousana and Jilasana dethrone King Surchandra and was replaced by King Kullachandra.
Later, even as the Viceroy of British Lord Lansdowne had written to Assam Chief Commissioner W.J. Quinton to acknowledge Kukkchandra as King of Manipur, the viceroy ordered to arrest Tikendrajit to sent outside the state. On March 22 Quinton along with 490 British army led by Lt. Colonel C. Mc. D Skene reached Manipur and ordered King Kullachandra to hand over Tikendrajit to them. As the King denied, the british troopers attack the palace to arrest Tikendrajit on March 24 , 1891. They also fire several rounds of gun shots but went in vain in arresting Tikendrajit.
For the intrusion and causing damage to the palace beside injuring many women and children the Manipuri punished 5 British army including Chief Commissioner of Assam Mr. J. W. Quinton, Commander of the 42 Gurkha Regiment Lt. Colonel C. Mc. D. Skene, Assistant Secretary of the Chief Commissioner Assam, W. H. Cossins, Lt. Simpson and Political Agent, Mr. St. Clair Grimwood.
This led the Anglo Manipur war and many were killed and hung to death after the Manipuris were defeated. Later King Kullachandra along with 22 freedom fighters were sent to Kalapani.
The statement also said that the idea of Har Har Tiranga by the government of India is built pan India. When 15 August is celebrated as joyous occasion for India, it is a shocking day for the people of Manipur. The outfit appealed not to amalgamate August 13 Patriots Day and the August 15 Independence Day.
