Imphal, July 16:
Unknown miscreants fired several rounds at the residence of Khoirom Loyalakpa, the editor and publisher of “Naharolgi Thoudang,” located at Kontha Khabam Lai Haraobam in Imphal East district. The incident occurred shortly after midnight today under the jurisdiction of Heingang police station. Earlier, the editor Khoirom Loyalakpa had been under threat from unknown armed men and was provided security guards, but the security was withdrawn on June 5, 2024.
The armed miscreants fired around six shots and fled from the scene, leaving damage to the residential gate of the editor. Loyalakpa was not present at his residence at the time of the attack. After receiving the information, a team from the Heingang police station, along with bomb experts, arrived at his residence and began an investigation into the matter.
Previously, the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and Editors’ Guild, Manipur (EGM) had lodged a complaint with the SP of Imphal East after unknown miscreants allegedly followed Loyalakpa’s vehicle while he was returning home on the day his security escort was withdrawn on June 5, 2024.
No group or individual has claimed responsibility so far.
Following the attack, members of the AMWJU and EGM had convened an emergency meeting at Manipur Press Club today evening and condemn the attack.
