Ukhrul, March 20:

The Manipur Hills Journalists’ Union (MHJU) and Editors of Churachandpur district-based newspapers have strongly condemned the recent act of vandalism targeting Zogam Today, a well-regarded newspaper, by unidentified miscreants. The attack, which took place amid the ongoing unrest in the district, has been described as a direct assault on press freedom and democracy.
In a joint statement, the Core Committee of Editors of Churachandpur district-based daily newspapers denounced the destruction of Zogam Today’s signboard and reported that agents of Eimi Times had also been obstructed. The committee demanded a formal apology from those responsible and urged individuals to refrain from harassing or disrupting media houses, hawkers, and journalists who are fulfilling their duty of providing information to the public.
Expressing solidarity with the Zogam Today team, the editors called on the authorities to ensure the safety and security of media personnel. They underscored the importance of upholding press freedom and allowing journalists to work without fear or intimidation. The statement was signed by editors from Nisin Thuhiltu, Manipur Express, Hmasawnna Thar, Zogam Today, Lamka Times, and Eimi Times.
In addition, MHJU urged the state government to take swift and decisive action against those responsible, ensuring that such incidents do not recur. The union reaffirmed its unwavering support for Zogam Today and the journalists of Churachandpur, who continue to work under challenging conditions to provide accurate and timely information.
The organization also expressed deep concern over the growing hostility toward media professionals, emphasizing that journalists play a crucial role in upholding democracy by keeping the public informed. Targeting media houses, hawkers, and reporters not only endangers press freedom but also disrupts the flow of vital information, further exacerbating the crisis in the state.
The union made a strong appeal to all communities involved in Manipur’s ongoing turmoil to refrain from further acts of violence. It reiterated its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and normalcy while urging individuals, organizations, and political entities to respect and uphold press freedom.
Furthermore, MHJU called on all stakeholders to safeguard media professionals who are working tirelessly to deliver news. The union stressed that at a time when reliable information is crucial, any attack on journalists is an attack on the very foundation of a free and fair society.
Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom, the MHJU urged authorities to take immediate steps to prevent further threats against journalists and media houses in Manipur.
