Imphal, July 22:
Meitei Leima has called for amnesty for Meitei village volunteers who have taken part in the defense of their villages and families against the attack of the Kuki militants.
The longstanding conflict, triggered by Kuki immigrants from Burma seeking to establish a separate administration or “Kukiland,” has intensified over the past 30 years. This has led to violent confrontations, with the Meitei community taking up arms to defend their villages, homes, and the state’s integrity.
In response to these threats, many from the Meitei community have picked up arms to safeguard their villages and localities against the violence initiated by the Kuki, who have utilized bombs and other weapons against the Meiteis.
Meitei Leima stated that despite the severity of the situation, there has been a perceived lack of adequate protection and decisive action from both state and central authorities. This perceived inaction has led some to justify the Meitei’s appropriation of weapons from state force camps as a necessary measure for self-defense.
