The Meitei Leepun has stated that its members and supporters are prepared for “court arrest” if its Chief, Heisnam Shilan, is taken into custody by police in connection with a case arising from a recent protest over the Tronglaobi killings.
In a statement issued today, the organisation confirmed that Manipur Police has served a Notice of Appearance under an FIR to its Chief Heisnam Shilan following remarks made during a rally held on April 12 at Uripok. The rally, organised by Uripok Apunba Lup and Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup under the banners of UAL and UNAL, was held in protest against the April 7 Tronglaobi incident in which two children were killed in an alleged RPG attack, along with three others who had reportedly gone to question the inaction of Central forces.
According to the statement, Heisnam Shilan had, during the rally, called for non-violent forms of protest, including demonstrations at the residences of elected representatives to press for action. The organisation, however, alleged that the subsequent police action against its leadership has triggered concern among its members and supporters.
“Asserting collective responsibility, the organisation stated that in the event of the arrest of its Chief, all members and supporters would voluntarily court arrest,” the statement said, indicating a possible escalation of the issue.
The organisation also noted that residents of Uripok, including women’s groups and local bodies, have expressed strong concern over the development, questioning the basis of the police action in the prevailing circumstances. It acknowledged the support extended by women and civil society groups across various localities.
Reiterating its position, Meitei Leepun stated that it remains committed to standing with the people and safeguarding the interests of the state. It also called for unity and public vigilance, urging people to work collectively to maintain peace and stability in Manipur.
