Imphal, Sept 4:
Meitei FAMBEI, a representative body of the adult Meitei community, on Sunday evening organized tribute events across the state to honor the Meitei martyrs. These individuals tragically lost their lives in the conflict that has now spanned over four months.
Several locations across the state witnessed large turnouts, predominantly women donning black attire. They presented floral tributes before a massive banner displaying a collage of the Meitei individuals lost in the ongoing conflict.
A woman, speaking at the roundabout where the Thangal General Statue stands at the Palace Gate, voiced her disappointment in the state leadership. “September 3 is now a significant date in Manipur’s history. We commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for our land. But our leaders seem indifferent. We’re unsure of their policies and plans,” she expressed.
The emotional resonance was palpable as she continued, “If more of our children are taken from us, more will rise. We, the women of Manipur, are prepared to give our lives for our motherland. How much longer does Biren Singh, our Chief Minister, intend to wait?”
Another attendee posed a poignant question, “Isn’t Chief Minister Biren satisfied with the number of deaths yet? Does he wish for us all to perish?”
In response to the escalating crisis in Manipur, Meitei FAMBEI announced a “Black September” observance, set to last from September 3 to September 21. The tribute event held on September 2 is a part of this observance, aimed at drawing attention to the urgency of the situation and the desperate plea of the Meitei community for decisive action. The event was held at Kangla western gate, Palace Gate, Uripok, Naoremthong and many other areas.
