Imphal, Oct 5:
The Meitei Erol Eyek Lonnasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has voiced strong criticism against the Manipur government, accusing authorities of negligence in securing the inclusion of Manipuri language as a Classical Indian Language. Speaking to media representatives, the president of MEELAL expressed frustration, noting that despite Manipuri meeting all the necessary criteria for the prestigious status, the relevant departments—the Language Department, Education (S) Department, and the Arts and Culture Department—have failed to coordinate and complete the required formalities.
The organization claimed that this inaction has caused embarrassment for Manipur’s Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, who has been advocating for the language’s recognition. Nevertheless, MEELAL assured the public that they, along with MP Sanajaoba, will continue their efforts to achieve Classical Language status for Manipuri.
In a separate appeal, MEELAL urged the government to prioritize the recruitment of Meitei Mayek teachers in primary schools. The group emphasized the importance of preserving the indigenous script and called for its integration into early education, urging authorities to ensure that Meitei Mayek is taught at the foundational level to promote the script’s widespread use and understanding.
