Imphal, Nov 13:
The Chairperson of the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR), Keisam Pradipkumar, has urgently called on all communities, stakeholders, and agencies involved in the ongoing conflict in Manipur to respect and safeguard the fundamental rights, dignity, and safety of innocent children and women. In a statement, Pradipkumar expressed deep concern over the loss of lives, particularly those of women and children, from both the Meitei and Kuki-Chin communities during the ongoing violence that has ravaged the state since May 2023.
Pradipkumar also condemned the recent abduction of six civilians, including three minors and three women, from Jakuradhor Karong in Jiribam District on November 11, 2024. The kidnappings, attributed to Kuki militants, were reportedly carried out after a fierce attack on CRPF personnel stationed in the area. The militants also burned down 13 shops and houses belonging to the Meitei community, resulting in the deaths of two elderly Meitei individuals. A complaint was filed with the police, and the case has been taken up under FIR No. 29(11)2024 BBK PS.
The six missing persons, as reported, are – Baby Telem Thajamanbi Devi (8 years), Laishram Chingkheinganba Singh (2.5 years), Laishram Langamba Singh (8 months), Laishram Heitombi Devi (25 years), Telem Thoibi Devi (31 years) and Yurenbam Rani Devi (60 years).
Pradipkumar stated that such actions against innocent children, women, and the elderly are a grave violation of international humanitarian laws, including the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). He emphasized that children and women should be protected from violence, regardless of the community or ethnic group they belong to.
The MCPCR Chairperson condemned all forms of violence targeting non-combatants, urging the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted women and children on humanitarian grounds. He appealed to various authorities, including the Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), the Chief Secretary of Manipur, and other key officials, to take swift action to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted individuals.
