A Manipuri girl named Mary Athokpam aged 30 years d/o Athokpam Birendrajit Singh and Lidzossa of Paomei Colony, Chingmeirong, Imphal East allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself on Tuesday at her boyfriend’s rented room in Gandhi Vihar under Timarpur Police Station, North Delhi.
The incident came to light when the boyfriend named Hiilozhi Kohusi also from Manipur who was sleeping in the same room saw her hanging from the ceiling fan with a “chunni” when he woke up at around 6am in the morning.
As soon as the news of suicide was heard a team of Manipuri Students Association Delhi (MSAD) rushed to the spot and made a first-hand enquiry. It is reported that the deceased girl worked at a BPO in Gurgaon and the boy works at a bank in Delhi. The deceased girl was married before to a guy from Patna, Bihar whom she later divorced. She also has a 7 year old son who lives with her parents at Imphal presently. She met her present boyfriend who is also a childhood friend in 2013 when she was in depression just after her divorce. Thereafter, they established a relationship until recently when the boy’s family objected it.
It is also reported that the girl had been under depression for the past few weeks when she came to know that the boy’s family were against their relationship and had even tried to commit suicide on the night of January 8, 2015. But she was prevented by her friends.
In connection with the case, Delhi Police has filed a case and investigation is going. The body of the deceased has been shifted to mortuary for autopsy. Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased have been informed.
MSAD team also went to Timarpur Police Station and urged the investigating officer for a proper investigation, so that no stones are left unturned and justice be delivered. MSAD will extend all kinds of support in every possible way.
