Imphal, Feb 29:

The Manipur Police Department strongly condemns the alleged attempted assassination of one of its Additional Superintendents of Police (Ops), stationed in Imphal West, along with other officers and personnel on the evening of February 27, 2024, by members of Arambai Tengol. Unfortunately, the perpetrators of this heinous attack on law enforcement remain at large.
Today, three Inspectors General of Police (IGP) from the Manipur Police, namely I.K. Muivah, K. Jayanta, and Kabib K, convened a press conference at the Manipur Police Headquarters in Babupara. They highlighted the grave nature of the incident and issued a press release affirming that the assault was orchestrated by individuals affiliated with Arambai Tenggol.
During the press conference, the released statement provided a detailed account of the event: “Throughout the incident, the family members of Moirangthem Amit Singh (Addl.SP, Ops, IW) were subjected to intimidation through gunfire, along with the wanton destruction of residences and properties. Additionally, the Addl. SP himself was forcefully taken captive, subjected to physical assault, and subsequently released following timely intervention by departmental authorities. Regrettably, various unfounded narratives are circulating across different platforms, including social media, contributing to the unwarranted defamation of both the concerned officer and the integrity of the police force at large. It is imperative for discerning individuals to grasp the underlying circumstances that precipitated this unprecedented and unwarranted act of aggression.”
The release further elucidated: “On the afternoon of February 27, 2024, a report was received concerning the theft/snatching of two Ambassador cars, identified by registration numbers MN07-X 7682 and MN01-X-7683, from the Government Oil Depot situated at North AOC, allegedly perpetrated by unknown armed individuals. Responding to this intelligence, the aforementioned officers, namely Moirangthem Amit Singh and Inspector P. Achouba Meitei (OC-CDO/IW), along with additional teams, promptly initiated a search operation and successfully intercepted the two stolen/snatched vehicles. Furthermore, they apprehended an individual implicated in the commission of the crime. Subsequently, a case under FIR no. 106(2)2024 was registered at Imphal Police Station, invoking sections 379A/400/506/34 of the IPC and 24(1-B) of the Arms Act, which is currently under investigation.”
The police statement underscored: “It is imperative to emphasize that the members of Arambai Tengol orchestrated a targeted assault on the aforementioned officers, as well as launched an attack on the residence and assets of the Addl. SP (Ops, IW), in direct correlation with the aforementioned incident and in the course of their lawful duties. It is noteworthy to highlight the unwavering dedication and relentless efforts of individuals such as Moirangthem Amit Singh, Addl.SP (Ops, IW), Inspector P. Achouba Meitei (OC-CDO/IV), and their counterparts, who have been steadfastly committed to upholding law and order within the state, particularly within the Imphal West District.”
The release proceeded: “The police department continues to exert maximum efforts to uphold law and order throughout the state, appealing to the general public for their cooperation. We urge the public to refrain from spreading rumors and disseminating fake news. Additionally, Arambai Tengol is implicated in numerous antisocial activities, including assaults on civilians, vehicle theft from both public and government officials, as well as extortion from the populace and business community. Under the guise of public protection, they solicit false support while engaging in various criminal activities. It’s imperative that the public does not fall prey to misinformation and instead extends cooperation to the Manipur Police in restoring peace and tranquility in the state. The Manipur Police remain steadfastly dedicated to safeguarding the lives and properties of the public. Furthermore, it’s important to reiterate that the Manipur Police operates as a neutral force, impartially upholding law and order without bias towards any particular community.”
The release further emphasized: “Any attempt to target or defame an officer or unit via social media will be met with firm action, including the initiation of cases and appropriate measures. The police force operates as a united team, from top to bottom, and any assault on its members will be treated with utmost seriousness, with stringent actions taken accordingly. On the night of February 28, 2024, an extensive area domination drive was carried out by a combined force comprising MR/IRB/CDOs/Civil Police, under the leadership of Superintendents of Police from various districts including IE/IW/TBL/KCG/BPR, in the valley districts. In light of the deliberate targeting of the Manipur Police, the necessity of deploying Army and other Central forces has become increasingly apparent. Combing operations will persist in the forthcoming days, and those responsible for such criminal activities will face consequences. It is imperative for the public to extend their cooperation in police endeavors.”
