Personnel from Manipur have received national recognition with the conferment of gallantry and service medals on the occasion of Republic Day 2026, as part of the nationwide honours announced by the Union Home Ministry.
From Manipur, the President of India approved the award of the Medal for Meritorious Service in the Manipur Police Service to Manbindhu Singh Rajkumar, Superintendent of Police; Dr Ibomcha Singh Sarangthem, Commandant; Kshetrimayum Prasanta Kumar Singh, Assistant Commandant; Nehkholal Gangte, Havildar; Premchand Singh Chungkham, Rifleman; Bijen Singh Pukhrambam, Assistant Sub Inspector; and Kamlemsang, Rifleman, in recognition of their dedicated and valuable service.
In the Fire Service category, Ranjitkumar Singh Chirom, Sub Officer, Manipur, has been awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service for his professional commitment and contribution to public safety.
The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service in the Police Service has been conferred upon Shashikumar Singh Khuraijam, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Manipur, for his distinguished record and sustained devotion to duty.
Meanwhile, the Medal for Gallantry on the occasion of Republic Day 2026 has been awarded to Langoljam Lenin Singh, Assistant Sub Inspector; Sidrath Thokchom, Assistant Sub Inspector; Thounaojam Nichal Singh, Havildar; Kumam Premananda Singh, Rifleman; and Ngasepam Vim Singh, Constable, all from Manipur, for displaying exceptional courage and devotion to duty in the face of grave risk.
At the national level, gallantry and various service medals have been awarded to 982 personnel from the police, fire service, home guards, civil defence and correctional services. The honours include 125 gallantry medals. According to the Union Home Ministry, the highest number of bravery awards have been given to personnel deployed in the Jammu and Kashmir operational theatre, followed by those serving in areas affected by Left Wing Extremism and the North Eastern region.
The official statement clarified that gallantry medals are awarded for rare and conspicuous acts of courage, including saving life and property, preventing crime or arresting criminals, taking into account the risks involved. The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded for a special record of service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service recognises valuable service marked by devotion to duty and professional excellence.
