Manipur observes World Tourism Day, calls for sustainable transformation

Manipur marked World Tourism Day at Cheiraoching, Thangmeiband, Imphal West, under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” highlighting the state’s tourism potential and the challenges it faces. The event, organized by the Department of Tourism, featured vibrant cultural performances by various ethnic communities, showcasing Manipur’s rich heritage and diversity.
Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, the chief guest, said the state possesses all the attributes to become a leading tourist destination in India, citing its natural beauty, favorable climate, and unique cultural legacy. However, he acknowledged that security concerns have limited the sector’s growth, with tourist inflows declining sharply compared to pre-conflict levels.
Goel emphasized the need for collective action from government agencies, tour operators, and stakeholders to rebuild confidence in Manipur as a safe travel destination. “Tourism thrives when visitors feel safe and assured. Strong coordination among the tourism department, tour operators, and allied sectors is essential,” he said.
The Chief Secretary also stressed sustainable tourism initiatives, including the formation of Destination Management Organizations, heritage conservation, local community engagement, and infrastructure development, positioning tourism as a pillar of economic growth, youth empowerment, and cultural exchange.
Principal Secretary (Tourism) Arun Kumar Sinha noted that while infrastructure and connectivity have improved, many remote areas with high tourism potential remain inaccessible. He added that easing access through local and protected area permits will be crucial to enhancing visitor experiences.
The programme also honored tour operators and guides for their contributions to the state’s tourism industry.
