Imphal, Jan 8:
The Manipur High Court has directed the formation of an ad-hoc committee to oversee the selection of players representing the state in the 38th National Games, scheduled to be held in Uttarakhand from January 28 to February 14, 2025.
The decision came in response to a writ petition filed by the Manipur Judo Association, which highlighted the urgency of the matter. The association cited delays in the selection process due to the unresolved finalization of elections for the Manipur Olympic Association (MOA), whose term had expired. This delay had stalled the selection of teams for various sports disciplines.
During the hearing, senior counsel N. Jotendro, representing the petitioners, urged the court to constitute an ad-hoc committee. He referred to similar instances in the past, where the court had intervened to ensure timely selection of athletes for national competitions.
Senior counsel M. Rarry, appearing for the state, supported the proposal, emphasizing the need to protect the interests of athletes and ensure their participation in the National Games. The state suggested that the committee include the Administrative Secretary and Director of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS), along with subject experts for various disciplines.
After considering the submissions, the High Court ordered the immediate formation of the committee. It will be composed of the Administrative Secretary and the Director of YAS, Government of Manipur, and will incorporate experts to ensure a fair and transparent selection process for each discipline.
The court’s decision aims to address the pressing concerns of the sporting community and ensure that Manipur’s athletes can compete at the upcoming National Games without further delays.
