Imphal, Feb 11:

In response to the death of S.I. Onkhomang Haokip from Muolcham Village during the communal clash, as mentioned in the Government order, in Bishnupur District, the Government of Manipur has sanctioned a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to his next of kin. The decision was formalized through an order signed by Lourembam Bikram, Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur District.
According to the order, the District Level Committee convened on December 28, 2023, endorsed the disbursement of financial aid not exceeding Rs 10,00,000 for providing ex-gratia assistance as the state’s share to the bereaved family. Lalbiekkim, the wife of the late Onkhomang Haokip, is identified as the rightful recipient of this compensation.
The communal clashes in Manipur have resulted in numerous casualties, with the situation showing no signs of abating over the past nine months. Despite continuous efforts, the government has struggled to quell the violence effectively. However, it has remained committed to providing support to the affected families by offering ex-gratia payments and compensation for the loss of lives and properties destroyed during these unfortunate events. However, the government has failed to bring peace to Manipur.
While the compensation serves as a form of financial assistance to the grieving family, it also underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the government in addressing the root causes of communal tensions in Manipur. As the death toll continues to rise and communal violence persists, there is a pressing need for sustained efforts towards reconciliation and long-term solutions to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future.
