Manipur today celebrated Mera Hou Chongba, the festival symbolizing unity among the state’s diverse indigenous communities. The grand celebration was held at Kangla, with active participation from both hill and valley communities.
Observed on the 15th lunar day of the Mera month in the Meitei calendar, the festival began with a colourful procession from Sana Konung (Royal Palace) to Kangla, led by King Leishemba Sanajaoba, who also serves as Rajya Sabha MP. The procession, joined by participants from across the state, reflected centuries-old bonds of fraternity.
Traditional rituals including Mera Thaomei Thanba and Mera Yenkhong Tamba were performed at Kangla, followed by the exchange of gifts between hill and valley representatives and vibrant cultural performances. A total of 135 tribal chiefs and 15 cultural troupes took part in this year’s event.
King Leishemba Sanajaoba described Mera Hou Chongba as the only festival uniting all indigenous communities of Manipur since 33 AD during the reign of Nongda Lairen Pakhangba. Participants like Rachubui Pame from Tamenglong expressed joy in joining the celebration, saying it strengthens the spirit of brotherhood. Since 2017, the state government has organized Mera Hou Chongba as a state-level event promoting peace and communal harmony.
