Imphal, Feb 4:
A proposal has been raised for a detailed discussion in the ongoing Manipur Assembly session regarding the demand for the inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of the Indian Constitution.
As the session progresses from February 10, the Assembly has been urged to take up a specific resolution addressing this issue. The Manipur Meetei Tribes Union (MMTU) has called on the Assembly to clarify the government’s stance on the demand and update the public on the steps taken so far regarding the inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list.
In the past, various political parties and elected representatives, including MPs and MLAs, had pledged to work towards securing ST status for the Meetei/Meitei community. However, the absence of any substantial progress has raised concerns among the people.
MMTU has also suggested that if the Assembly fails to take up the issue, any concerned MLA should introduce a private member resolution to push for the discussion. The organization insists that despite political setbacks, community-based organizations must continue their efforts to ensure justice for the Meetei/Meitei people.
The issue of including the Meetei/Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list has been a long-standing demand, with political representatives, including MPs and MLAs, expressing support for it. However, despite these pledges, the lack of substantial progress has led to frustration among the people. The Manipur Meetei Tribes Union (MMTU) is now urging the ongoing Manipur Assembly session to prioritize this matter and provide clarity on the government’s position, as well as an update on the steps taken so far.
The MMTU has suggested that if the Assembly does not address this issue directly, any concerned MLA should introduce a private member resolution.
