Man shot dead by unidentified assailants in Kakching district; JAC demands justice

A 51-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Keirak Makha Leikai under Kakching Police Station in Kakching district.
The deceased has been identified as Chingakham Malemnganba Meitei (51), son of Parijat Meitei of Tejpur Awang Leikai in Kakching district. According to police sources, he was found with gunshot wounds at around 6:30 pm.
Soon after the incident, a team from Kakching Police Station rushed to the spot and began an on-site investigation. Police said the body was yet to be recovered as the team was waiting for forensic experts to arrive and examine the scene. The motive behind the killing remains unclear and is under investigation.
Meanwhile, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) has been formed in connection with the killing of Chingakham Malemnganba Meitei. The committee strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an inhuman and barbaric act committed against an innocent citizen.
In a statement, the JAC said the shocking crime has created fear, anger and concern among the public. The committee also conveyed deep sorrow and extended solidarity to the bereaved family members, who are currently facing immense grief following the tragic incident.
The JAC stated that the deceased was the sole breadwinner of his family and that his sudden death has left the family in a vulnerable condition. It urged the Government to provide adequate compensation and necessary assistance to ensure the livelihood and future security of the victim’s family.
The committee also demanded that the authorities conduct a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation into the killing and identify all those involved before March 16, 2026. It further called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and strict punishment in accordance with the law.
The JAC stated that the family members and the committee will not claim the body of the deceased until the culprits are identified and arrested. It also warned that democratic forms of agitation would be launched if justice is delayed.
