The Mayai Lambi Apunba Lup (MALAL) has raised serious concerns over the ongoing construction of National Highway-137A, popularly known as Mayai Lambi, alleging poor execution and lack of basic infrastructure, posing risks to commuters.
In a statement, MALAL said the absence of proper drainage systems across several stretches has severely affected the condition of the road. During an inspection carried out on March 27, the organisation observed extensive waterlogging on and along the highway, resulting in mud and slush, making the route unsafe and difficult for daily commuters.
The organisation highlighted that the narrow width of the road has emerged as a major safety concern, with vehicles often unable to pass each other smoothly, thereby increasing the likelihood of accidents. It further pointed out that incomplete construction in areas such as Samurou has caused severe inconvenience to the public, particularly during peak hours in the morning, afternoon and evening.
MALAL stated that the highway was intended to be developed as a standard, well-designed road in line with present-day requirements. However, despite repeated appeals to the concerned authorities, including the Public Works Department (PWD), contractors and senior officials, the progress has remained unsatisfactory.
The organisation noted that the project was sanctioned by the Centre on October 21, 2025, at an estimated cost of Rs. 74.22 crore and was formally launched on February 9, 2026 by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh. It added that assurances were also given by Imphal West Deputy Commissioner Mayanglambam Rajkumar regarding necessary action.
MALAL further alleged that the poor condition of the road has caused hardship to the public, with residents facing health issues due to dust and deteriorating surroundings.
Urging immediate intervention, the organisation demanded that the concerned departments complete the work within a stipulated timeframe. MALAL Secretary Shandam Bijoy warned that failure to address the issues promptly may lead to intensified agitation.
