Imphal, April 9:
Residents of Sagolband Meino Leirak in Imphal West district staged a sit-in protest today condemning a firing incident at a children’s home for orphaned boys. Protesters held placards and raised slogans demanding immediate arrest of the unidentified gunmen responsible for the attack.
According to police sources, the firing incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. when at least two masked miscreants arrived at the premises and fired multiple rounds—estimated between six to eight—at the Children’s Home for Boys. CCTV footage confirmed the presence of two armed individuals who opened fire before fleeing the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the children or staff.
Khaidem Ongbi Romita, who runs the home, expressed deep concern over the incident. “It is really unfortunate that a place meant for children’s safety has been targeted. The reason behind the attack is still unknown. We appeal to everyone not to let such incidents happen again,” she told reporters.
The children’s home, managed by the United Social Development Association under the Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) of the Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur, houses around 30 boys.
A case has been registered, and police have launched an investigation. Security has been tightened in the area as tension remains high.
