Imphal, Jan 24: Students of Lilong Haoreibi College today block Imphal Moreh National Highway at Lilong Usoipokpi area in protest against the government failure to take against the College principal Md Sahidur Rahman for misappropriation of college fund. Since 11 am today the students came out on the National Highway and block all sort of traffic until the Thoubal District SP came and intervene at around 1 pm today.
The students took out the benches and desk from the college and to block the road. Some people whom the students said were not students of the college started burning the waiting shed of the college. It was however extinguished by the students.
Later a team of police led by the Thoubal district SP came and control the situation. The SP arrange meeting of the students with the DC of Thoubal district.
Later, a representative of the college students’ Union were allowed to talk with the Education Minister Th. Radheshyam. The Education Minister assured the students of prompt action against the principal after proper investigation before January 28. The student body after getting assurance suspended the agitation.
MD Sabir Rahman, General Secretary of the students’ union of Lilong Haoreibi College said that the students’ Union had submitted memorandum to the government regarding the matter for taking up appropriate action against the College Principal for misappropriation of Fund since the last two months. As no action has been taken up the students out of anger today came out and block the traffic to mark the protest. The student leaders also alleged the College principal for misappropriation of over Rs. 92 lakhs.
Due to the agitation by the students’ Union the ongoing practical examination being underway has been put to halt for the college.
