Liangmai Naga Council seeks exemption from NSCN-IM taxation for tribe members

The Liangmai Naga Council, Tamenglong Zone (LNCM-TZ) has formally submitted a request to the Chief Executive Officer of the Autonomous District Council (ADC), Tamenglong, seeking exemption of all Liangmai tribe members from contributing to the taxation-welfare fund of the NSCN-IM.
The appeal, dated July 23, 2025, was signed by Lovingson Motia, General Secretary of LNCM-TZ. In the letter, the Council highlighted that the Liangmai tribe is currently not under any taxation obligation to the NSCN-GPRN. Citing this, the Council requested that Liangmai members be exempted from any welfare fund contributions associated with the group.
The letter further urged that Liangmai individuals be allowed to sign service cards or submit necessary official documents without pressure or compulsion. The Council emphasized that such requirements should be carried out freely, without coercion or undue influence.
The Liangmai Naga Council also expressed concern over what it described as “unfair treatment and biased judgments” meted out to the Liangmai community under the present governance of the GPRN. It stated that these developments have forced the community to collectively assert its position in the pursuit of justice, equity, and dignity.
Attached to the request is a certified copy of the Liangmai General Assembly Resolution, specifically Resolution Number 5 titled “Non Corporation to NSCN/GPRN,” adopted on March 25, 2025. This resolution forms the basis of the Council’s request for exemption.
Calling for urgent and fair consideration of the matter, the Liangmai Naga Council expressed hope that the authorities would take necessary steps to uphold the rights and dignity of the Liangmai people.
The letter marks a significant stance by the tribe, reflecting its unified position amid ongoing challenges relating to taxation and political affiliations in the region.
