Landslide blocks Imphal–Jiribam Road, traffic resumes after clearance

Vehicular movement along the Imphal–Jiribam National Highway-37 was disrupted this morning after a landslide occurred near Khongsang Railway Station at Chainage No. 96. Several trucks and passenger vehicles were left stranded on both sides of the road following the sudden slide of mud and debris.
Officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) rushed to the spot and, in coordination with personnel of Khongsang Police Station, immediately began clearance work. Heavy excavators were deployed to remove the debris, and after hours of effort, traffic was restored at around 12.30 pm.
Though the landslide was cleared, commuters expressed concern over the recurring problem of blockades along the Imphal–Jiribam highway. The route, considered a lifeline for transporting essential commodities into Manipur, often suffers from frequent landslides, poor road conditions, and narrow stretches, causing prolonged disruptions.
Truck drivers stranded on the highway told this daily that such blockages have become a routine ordeal during the monsoon season. They urged the authorities to take long-term measures to stabilize the slopes and improve the condition of NH-37, which remains vulnerable to natural calamities.
Officials assured that steps are being taken to ensure smoother movement along the highway, but travelers remain cautious as fresh landslides cannot be ruled out during the ongoing rainy spell.
