Lamphel Super Market Committee stages sit-in, demands NRC update with 1951 as base year

The Lamphel Super Market Co-ordinating Committee staged a sit-in protest at Lamphel Super Market on Thursday, demanding the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur with 1951 as the base year, along with the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and other measures.

The protest was organised under the aegis of the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), PLMPAM, AMAWOVA, the Committee on Human Rights (COHR) and the Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF). Women protesters held placards highlighting demands that included the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), and opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Speaking to the media, COHR chairman Phulindro Konsham stressed the need to update the NRC before the Census, while calling for the immediate resettlement of IDPs in their respective homelands.

He also raised concerns over alleged human rights violations and continued attacks on civilians in Manipur, urging the governments of Manipur and India to take action against those responsible and ensure the safety of lives and property.

Konsham called for a lasting resolution to the ongoing crisis and said the committee would continue to pursue its demands through democratic means.
