Imphal, August 16: Local residents of Lambui Khongnangkhong Dye House Leirak today staged a sit-in-protest against the government proposal for eviction of land from the surroundings of Lambui Khongnangkhong ground for construction of Mela ground. The protest organised under the initiative of Lambui Khongnagkhong Dye House Leirak strongly opposed the government plan to acquire 50 ft of lands from north and south of the ground where buildings of three schools including two government schools are presently standing.

“We are not against the construction of the Mela ground, but we are against the decision to acquire lands of the schools and other inhabited area instead of using the government land located nearby”, a member of the committee said.

Recently, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi had hinted the newly constructed ground at Lambui Khongnangkhong as a standby venue for the Sangai Festival. In a meeting with media persons the chief minister had stated that if the ongoing construction of the Sanjenthong bridge is delayed then the government might choose the Lambui Khongnangkhong ground for the Sangai festival.
