Several houses were set ablaze in the abandoned village of Khoikai in Manipur’s Kamjong district early today morning, adding to the escalating violence between Kuki and Naga communities in the state.
Police said suspected militants set fire to houses in Khoikai, near Chassad village, at around 5.30 am. The extent of the damage and the identity of those responsible had not been established.
The village had been deserted after residents fled amid intensifying clashes between the two communities, leaving their homes vulnerable to further attacks.
The latest arson incident comes against the backdrop of recurring violence between Kuki and Naga communities since early 2026. Reports indicate that more than 50 people have been killed and dozens of houses burnt in the clashes, which have affected Tamenglong, Noney, Kangpokpi, Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
The torching of houses in an already deserted village raises fresh concerns over the safety of displaced residents and the continuing destruction of homes amid the prolonged unrest.
