Imphal, Aug 26:
The proscribed group PREPAK claimed responsibility for shooting Laishram Thoiba in the left back on Friday evening. In a statement issued by the Publicity Officer of the Department of Publicity & Propaganda, the group announced that Laishram Thoiba Singh, 28, son of L. Iboyaima Singh of Thanga Khunjem Leikai, was taken into custody by the Special Task Force-1 of PREPAK. During interrogation, Thoiba allegedly confessed to killing his wife by hanging her at Moirang Khunou Primary School Khongnang Lambi Awang Leirak. Due to the consideration of his family, PREPAK stated that Thoiba was given a lighter punishment.
Thoiba married Ningthoujam Ningol Sophia Devi, 25, daughter of N. Shamjai of Thanga Salam Leikai, in February 2015. According to the statement, Thoiba, in collusion with his parents, sold all the jewelry Sophia brought with her at the time of their marriage. They then began harassing her, demanding money from her parental home. When she refused, she was assaulted and forced to return to her parental home.
The statement further alleges that Sophia’s suffering was ignored by those around her, leading to her tragic death. On February 25, 2016, Sophia was found hanging from a branch of a tree outside Thoiba’s home. Although the initial claim was that she had taken her own life, her body did not show signs of death by hanging. Instead, the postmortem report indicated that Sophia had been strangled and beaten, leading to her death.
Following her death, the police registered a case, and Thoiba was jailed for a year. However, PREPAK criticized the legal system in India, calling it inadequate for delivering justice. The group claimed that they had conducted a thorough investigation over several years and found sufficient evidence to prove that Thoiba was guilty. Consequently, they took him into custody, punished him, and promised to continue their efforts to deliver justice in cases of violence against women.
PREPAK emphasized its commitment to protecting women from violence and urged the people of Manipur to work towards creating a safer society for all.
