A tragic incident occurred today morning in Saiton village, located on the border of Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts when a woman farmer was shot dead by armed Kuki militants while working in a paddy field. The attack took place around 11 am when militants opened fire towards the field from a distance of 100 metres. BSF personnel deployed in the nearby area too retaliated and the firing took place for around an hour.
The farmer, who was reportedly harvesting paddy, was struck by a bullet and died instantly. The gunfire sent other farmers running for safety, and for several hours, the body of the deceased remained in the field as it was unsafe to retrieve. Village volunteers eventually risked the situation and managed to recover the body. The deceased lady farmer has been identified as Sapam Sophia Leima (34) wife of Sapam Dayananda Meitei of Watha Lambi Santipur.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, while security measures in the area have been heightened to prevent further violence. The community has been left in shock and mourning over the tragic loss.
