Imphal, March 9:
The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mr. Lalgouthang Singsit, who was killed in a clash with central paramilitary forces at Keithelmanbi Military Colony (KMC), Kangpokpi District. Condemning the incident, KWOHR extended condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for their strength during this difficult time.
The organization strongly opposes the “Free Movement” programme imposed by the authorities in Manipur, arguing that it reflects government indifference and failure to address the struggles of the Kuki people, who have faced hardships for nearly two years. KWOHR criticized efforts to restore normalcy without addressing the root causes of ongoing issues, calling it a populist move that neglects the community’s concerns.
Additionally, KWOHR highlighted the failure of authorities to address law-and-order issues in the valley districts, alleging that looted weapons from state armories have been used against Kuki villagers. The group dismissed claims that the situation has improved, stating that mere surrendering of a few weapons does not resolve the larger threats of violence and insecurity.
Reiterating its stance, KWOHR insisted that a political solution must precede peace and reaffirmed its demand for a Union Territory with a Legislature for the Kuki people.
