Imphal, May 20:
Despite government measures to protect historical sites under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958, the Kuki-Zo Narco Terrorist group, Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), has reportedly established a camp at Thangjing, a sacred Meitei site, renaming it Mt Olive. A video shows KNF members flaunting weapons and celebrating at Thangjing, inciting deep resentment within the Meitei community.
The ongoing conflict since May 3, 2023, has seen the destruction of several Meitei heritage sites, including Kongba Maru Laipham and Ima Kondong Lairembi temple. Over 393 Meitei temples have been reportedly destroyed. The central government’s alleged inaction has drawn severe criticism, with accusations of failing to protect Meitei heritage. This destruction underscores a troubling failure to safeguard national historical and cultural sites.
