Kuki Volunteers warn of counter measures over embargo on Chassad Village

The Village Volunteers Eastern Zone (VVEZ) of the Kuki community has strongly reacted to the imposition of an indefinite economic embargo on Kuki residents of Chassad village, allegedly declared by Zingsho Katamnao Long under the Eastern Students’ Union.
In a press communiqué issued on March 26, VVEZ termed the embargo as unjustifiable and inhumane, stating that such actions run contrary to the principles of peaceful coexistence among communities. The organisation asserted that the Kuki community holds no ill intent towards the Tangkhul community and described the move as a coercive and punitive measure.
Condemning the declaration, VVEZ stated that it violates mutual respect and harmony between communities. The group further warned that if the embargo is not unconditionally withdrawn within 24 hours, it would be compelled to take “appropriate and proportionate measures.”
According to the statement, such measures may include restrictions on the movement of Tangkhul community members along the Yairipok–Ukhrul route via Sangshak Road.
VVEZ also maintained that any consequences arising from the situation would rest entirely with the Zingsho Katamnao Long, holding the organisation accountable for escalating tensions.
The development points to growing strain in inter-community relations in the region, with VVEZ asserting that its actions are aimed at safeguarding the interests of Kuki residents of Chassad village.
