Imphal, April 12:
Meitei villages in the Heirok area of Manipur came under attack by Kuki militants in the early hours today.
The assault, launched from the Pelyang Kuki Area within the Machi Block of Tengoupal District, commenced around 1 am today. The militants reportedly descended from the Penyang Kuki village area, located approximately 20 kilometers from the Heirok Police Station in Thoubal district.
During the attack, one Meitei volunteer sustained injuries. The injured individual, identified as Ningthoujam James (24), son of Rajiv from Heirok Part-II Laimayum, has been admitted to Raj Medicity for medical treatment. While details regarding the extent of injuries sustained by James are pending, it is believed that the Kuki attackers also suffered casualties during the confrontation.
The initial gunfight gradually subsided after a period of time. However, tensions reignited at approximately 8:30 am when reports surfaced of the entry of Assam Rifles into the area. Locals alleged that the resurgence of the gunfight was instigated by the intervention of Assam Rifles, who purportedly sided with the Kuki militants and fired upon Meitei volunteers.
Additional security forces have since been deployed to the area to quell further violence and restore order. After a period of relative calm, marked by the onset of the election season, the periphery areas witnessed a resurgence of conflict by today’s attack.
