A one-day awareness programme on the protection of wild bears was held today at the Community Hall of the Maha Area Chiefs Association (MACA) in Panchai, Chandel district. The event, organized by the Divisional Forest Office (DFO) Chandel, witnessed significant participation from the Kuki community, with as many as 52 village chiefs attending the session.
The programme was graced by Dr. N. Munal Meitei, DFO Chandel; Angam Jasha, Chairman of MACA; Dausel Reuben, Range Officer, Chakpikarong; K. Pawankumar, Range Officer, Chandel; and W.L. Robertson, Secretary of the Ananlol Chiefs Association, among others.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. N. Munal highlighted that there are four species of bears in the world, out of which three—the Himalayan or Asiatic Black Bear, the Sloth Bear, and the Malayan Sun Bear—are found in Manipur. He noted that while the Himalayan Black Bear is widely seen in the state, its population has sharply declined. Once abundant, these species are now classified under Schedule I (endangered) due to rampant deforestation and hunting for meat.
“If this trend continues, bears which were once part of our natural heritage will only be seen in photographs, depriving future generations of witnessing them in the wild,” Dr. Munal cautioned.
Emphasising the importance of the day’s programme, Dr. Munal expressed satisfaction over the active participation of Kuki chiefs and leaders. He said their involvement not only strengthens conservation efforts but also serves as a meaningful step toward fostering peace and harmony in the state. “Today’s gathering marks not just the protection of wild bears but also a collective move towards rebuilding trust and unity among communities,” he observed.
