KSA storms Raj Bhavan, demands removal of MU VC

A large number of student volunteers under the aegis of the Kangleipak Students’ Association today thronged Raj Bhavan in Imphal, demanding immediate termination of Manipur University Vice Chancellor Prof. N. Lokendra Singh and a high level enquiry into the alleged irregularities in the university administration and recruitment process.
The protesting students, with placards and shouting slogans, had gathered near Raj Bhavan around noon, demanding intervention by the Governor. The situation turned tense when the students tried to advance towards the complex of Raj Bhavan and were thwarted by police deployed in the area. A scuffle ensued for a brief period before police managed to contain the situation.
Speaking to the media, KSA President S. Bidyananda reiterated the association’s long-standing allegations that the Vice Chancellor and his subordinates have been violating University statutes and ordinances with impunity. He accused Prof. Lokendra of unilaterally amending Statute 19 without following due procedures and manipulating the recruitment process for both teaching and non-teaching staff in violation of university conventions.
Referring to the earlier statement, KSA had accused the Vice Chancellor of sidelining merit-based recruitment in favour of people with links with particular groups and interests. The association also claimed large-scale administrative irregularities and procedural lapses have eroded the academic integrity of Manipur University, once regarded as the premier institution of higher learning in the state.
The student body has been repeatedly demanding the constitution of an independent enquiry committee by the Ministry of Education and the Governor of Manipur, who is the Chancellor of the university, to probe the alleged violations. It warned that continued inaction would invite intensified agitation in the coming days.
Today’s protest is an escalation of KSA’s months-long campaign against the Vice Chancellor through repeated memorandums and sit-in protests. The association claims their demand is not politically motivated but rather to ensure transparency and accountability in the way the university functions.
