Imphal, Jan 10:

The Koubru Range Liangmai Women Union has strongly condemned the alleged attack on an indigenous Naga woman from K. Lungwiram (Konsakhul Lungwiram) by individuals reportedly from Munlai, Leilonkhunnou, L. Phaiyang, and L. Phaikot villages in Kangpokpi District. The incident occurred on January 7, 2025, around 9:30 AM, and has been described as a heinous and barbaric act.
According to the Union, the perpetrators, armed with slings, sticks, and other weapons, allegedly assaulted the woman, dragged her on the ground, and used abusive language. They described the attack as an egregious violation of the victim’s dignity and identity, labeling it as tantamount to an attempt to murder. The Union emphasized that such actions are unacceptable and have caused widespread fear and trauma among innocent Naga women.
The Union highlighted that, in Liangmai Naga customary practices, the dignity and consent of women are held in the highest regard. They asserted that the alleged actions of the perpetrators are an affront to the principles of a civilized society.
In response to the incident, the Union initiated an indefinite bandh in Liangmai Naga-dominated areas of the Koubru Range ancestral lands on January 8, 2025. The bandh is described as a peaceful demonstration of resentment and solidarity against the attack. Women volunteers are reported to be monitoring vehicular movement, with exemptions granted for medical emergencies, examinations, and other unavoidable circumstances upon prior approval.
The Koubru Range Liangmai Women Union addressed allegations related to the bandh, clarifying that during the peaceful protest, women volunteers counted the number of Kuki individuals present in vehicles without touching or disrespecting any items, including coffins. They maintained that the process was conducted with respect and diligence, ensuring smooth passage while upholding decorum. The Union refuted claims of disrespect toward corpses or invasive behavior.
The Koubru Range Liangmai Women Union alleged that the attack involved volunteers and residents from the aforementioned villages and demanded that the individuals responsible present themselves at the Union’s office. They warned that the bandh would intensify if this demand was not met.
Additionally, the Koubru Range Liangmai Women Union called upon the Government of Manipur to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice promptly and punished according to the law. They described the incident as a severe violation of human rights and dignity and urged all communities to collectively seek justice for the victim.
The Koubru Range Liangmai Women Union also stated that should any further incidents arise, the chiefs of the involved villages, their volunteers, COTU, and the Government of Manipur would be held fully responsible. The indefinite bandh will continue until the Union’s demands are met.
