Imphal, Jan 11:
Manipur has become the first state in India to successfully achieve the induced breeding of Sareng (Wallago attu), a landmark achievement in the fisheries sector. This milestone was announced by Heikham Dingo, Minister of Fisheries, Social Welfare, Skill, Labour, Employment, and Entrepreneurship, during the 2nd Imoinu Fish Festival held at Hatta Kangjeibung.
The Minister attributed this success to the collaborative efforts of local fish farmers and the Department of Fisheries, who combined indigenous knowledge with scientific techniques to accomplish this feat. Heikham Dingo extended heartfelt wishes to the people on the occasion of the Imoinu Festival, celebrating this remarkable progress in aquaculture.
Highlighting the state’s achievements, Minister Dingo noted that increased fish production has significantly reduced dependency on external fish supplies. “The efforts of the Fisheries Department and fish farmers have brought down import expenses from ¹ 400 crore to ¹ 200 crore annually,” he stated. The department is also strategizing further to minimize fish imports into the state.
The 2nd Imoinu Fish Festival featured 120 stalls, including those representing internally displaced persons, and made available 80,000 kilograms of fish. Popular varieties like ‘Sareng’ and ‘Nung-nga’ were among the highlights of the event.
