The Kuki Inpi Manipur has voiced strong criticism of recent remarks made by Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who suggested that his government was ready to engage in peace talks with representatives of the Kuki-Zo community. The Chief Minister’s comments, which implied that the Kuki-Zo people were open to negotiations for peace and reconciliation within the framework of the Manipur state government, have been sharply rebuked by the Kuki Inpi Manipur.
In a statement, the Kuki Inpi Manipur clarified that the Kuki-Zo people unequivocally reject any engagement with the Manipur state government, which they accuse of orchestrating an ethnic cleansing campaign against their community. The organization had previously declined an invitation from Dinganglung Gangmei, Chairman of the Hill Area Committee, Manipur, in a letter dated 8th May 2024. The letter explicitly stated that the Kuki-Zo people no longer recognize any connection with the Manipur state government, which they believe has threatened their existence and perpetrated ethnic genocide.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur emphasized that the notion of “Peace and Reconciliation” with the Manipur state government, without addressing the profound injustices and suffering experienced by their community, is considered unrealistic and unacceptable. The organization reiterated that the only viable solution is the establishment of a “Union Territory with Legislative Powers” for the Kuki-Zo people.
Furthermore, the Kuki Inpi Manipur has stated that no individual or entity has been authorized to represent the Kuki-Zo people in any discussions or negotiations with the Manipur state government.
