Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has clarified that it is not opposed to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls but objects to the exclusion of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the exercise.
In a statement issued by Information Secretary Janghaolun Haokip, KIM said media reports portraying the organisation as being against the SIR had misinterpreted its earlier statement.
KIM stated that its concern stems from the fact that many displaced persons, who lost their homes during the ongoing ethnic conflict and are currently residing in relief camps or temporary settlements, may be unable to participate in the revision process.
The organisation maintained that any exercise which effectively disenfranchises displaced citizens cannot be considered fair or inclusive. It reiterated that it has no objection to the SIR itself, but said the exercise remains unacceptable in its present form unless adequate arrangements are made by the authorities to ensure the participation of all eligible IDPs.
The clarification indicates a nuanced position within Kuki leadership circles, with KIM’s objection focused on protecting the electoral rights of displaced persons rather than opposing the revision exercise outright.
