KHRC condemns alleged attack on K. Songlung, rejects ZUF claim of anti-poppy operation

The Kuki Human Rights Council (KHRC) has condemned what it described as an attack on K. Songlung Kuki village in Kangchup sub-division of Sadar Hills, allegedly carried out by the ZUF–Kamson faction and the NSCN–IM on January 26.
In a statement, the KHRC termed the incident a direct and deliberate attack on the Kuki community and rejected claims by the ZUF–Kamson faction that the action was part of an anti-poppy cultivation drive. The council alleged that the targeting of a Kuki village on Republic Day indicated a premeditated attempt to intimidate and terrorise the community.
According to the KHRC, K. Songlung village was extensively damaged, with houses, vehicles, property and agricultural land allegedly destroyed, leaving a large number of families homeless and traumatised. The council described the incident as a serious violation of human rights and an affront to the principles of justice, equality and the Constitution of India.
The KHRC further alleged that the incident marked the second such attack on a Kuki village in January 2026 involving the same groups. Warning of wider consequences, the council stated that such actions could push the region towards further instability and violence.
Demanding immediate intervention, the KHRC urged the Government of India to take firm and decisive action against the ZUF–Kamson faction and the NSCN–IM and to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. It also called upon the authorities to ensure the safety and security of the affected villagers and to provide adequate relief, rehabilitation and compensation.
